Son-in-law should be part of bakery assault case investigation: CM Punjab

LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif said Wednesday that his son-in-law Imran Ali should be included in the bakery assault case investigation.

“It is my firm belief that nobody is above the law and I have issued instructions that this case be dealt totally on merit and justice be done,” Sharif said on his Facebook page.
Imran Ali said he was ready to be included in the investigation of the case.
Meanwhile a Judicial magistrate granted bail to eight men alleged of beating the bakery employee. Earlier the seven policemen and a civilian had been sent to jail, on a fourteen day remand.
The incident came to light when a CCTV video surfaced on social media websites showing the bakery employee being beaten by guards.

Foreign investment in Pakistan plummets

KARACHI: Foreign investment in Pakistan plummeted by 67 percent in the first quarter, according to official data, with experts blaming the fall on poor economic management, energy shortages and persistent
terrorism.
The figures from the central State Bank of Pakistan showed net foreign
direct investment (FDI) from July to September was just $87 million, compared with $263 million in the same period last year. Pakistan's financial year begins on July 1.
The overall FDI inflow during the quarter was $287 million while the outflow was $200 million, with only the oil and gas exploration sector
recording a positive net figure.
Even the normally popular telecommunications sector registered a net
outflow of $100.9 million.
Analysts said FDI inflows have been falling for the last four years.
"Poor economic management and persistent militancy has forced investors away from a market which has huge potential and prospects," said economist A.B. Shahid.
Earlier this month the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Pakistan's economic situation was worsening and the country faced a return to double-digit inflation as the government prints money to finance its deficit.
The IMF also predicted growth of just 3-3.5 percent and warned the
country's external accounts were deteriorating, with incoming investment slowing and the central bank's reserves dropping.
"But the biggest of the negatives is the deteriorating law and order
situation that seems unmanageable," Shahid said.
Pakistan has repaid $1.3 billion of IMF loans in four instalments, including a $400 million chunk in August, and is due to pay a further $2.5 billion in the current fiscal year, which ends on June 30.
The central bank said Pakistan had foreign reserves of $14.4 billion
dollars as of last week. (AFP)

Rivals Bring Bare Fists to Rematch

President Obama and Mitt Romney engaged Tuesday in one of the most intensive clashes in a televised presidential debate, with tensions between them spilling out in interruptions, personal rebukes and accusations of lying as they parried over the last four years under Mr. Obama and what the next four would look like under a President Romney.
Competing for a shrinking sliver of undecided voters, many of them women, their engagements at times bordered on physical as they circled each other or bounded out of their seats while the other was speaking, at times more intent to argue than to address the questions over jobs, taxes, energy, immigration and a range of other issues.
Mr. Obama, criticized by his own party for a lackluster debate performance two weeks ago, this time pressed an attack that allowed him to often dictate the terms of the debate. But an unbowed Mr. Romney was there to meet him every time, and seemed to relish the opportunity to challenge a sitting president.
Mr. Obama’s assertive posture may well have stopped the clamor of concern from supporters that had been weighing on his campaign with three weeks and one more debate to go before the election.
The president’s broadsides started with a critique of Mr. Romney for his opposition to his administration’s automobile bailout in his first answer — “Governor Romney said we should let Detroit go bankrupt” — and ended more than 90 minutes later with an attack on Mr. Romney’s secretly taped comments about the “47 percent” of Americans who he said did not take responsibility for their own lives.
“When he said behind closed doors that 47 percent of the country considers themselves victims who refuse personal responsibility — think about who he was talking about,” the president said toward the end of the debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
It was as if a different, highly charged president had taken the stage rather than the reluctant, disengaged-seeming candidate who showed up to meet Mr. Romney at their first debate two weeks ago.
Mr. Romney stayed acutely focused on Mr. Obama’s record in the face of it all, saying that the president had failed to deliver what he promised in his 2008 campaign and arguing repeatedly and strenuously, “We just can’t afford four more years like the last four years.”
He credited Mr. Obama for being “great as a speaker and describing his vision.” But then he brought down the ultimate hammer in a challenge to an incumbent: “That’s wonderful, except we have a record to look at. And that record shows he just hasn’t been able to cut the deficit, to put in place reforms for Medicare and Social Security to preserve them, to get us the rising incomes we need.”
The two took pains to fashion their arguments toward female voters, with the debate seeming at times directed entirely at them. Mr. Obama mentioned Mr. Romney’s vow to cut government funding for Planned Parenthood at least four times; Mr. Romney repeatedly mentioned that under Mr. Obama: “There are three and a half million more women living in poverty today than when the president took office. We don’t have to live like this.”
And Mr. Romney sought to broaden his appeal to women by softening his tone on reproductive issues, saying: “Every woman in America should have access to contraceptives.”
Emphasizing his record of diversity as governor based on his own recruiting, he said, “I brought us whole binders full of women.”
It is a bit of conventional wisdom that undecided voters seek comity in their leaders. There was none of that Tuesday.
At times the back and forth was personal in small ways. Having already invoked the 14 percent effective tax rate that Mr. Romney personally paid, Mr. Obama mentioned Mr. Romney’s investment in Chinese companies. Then Mr. Romney asked if Mr. Obama had looked at his own pension for its investments.
“I don’t look at my pension,” Mr. Obama said. “It’s not as big as yours.”
But at other moments the verbal sparring took on a deeper, emotional resonance, such as when Mr. Romney suggested that the administration was intentionally misleading in its shifting explanations for the attack on the American mission in Benghazi, Libya, that resulted in the deaths of the American ambassador, J. Christopher Stevens, and three other Americans there.
“The suggestion that anybody in my team, whether the secretary of state, our U.N. ambassador, anybody on my team would play politics or mislead when we’ve lost four of our own, Governor, is offensive,” Mr. Obama said, standing and looking intently at his opponent. “That’s not what we do. That’s not what I do as president.”
Mr. Obama noted that he had gone to the Rose Garden the day after the attack to say “this was an act of terror.”

Less than 25% of Pakistani women use microfinance loans

ISLAMABAD: Less than 25 percent of Pakistan’s women entrepreneurs are microfinance borrowers as most businesswomen rely on savings, personal assets and family loans for capital.
A World Bank report on “Are Pakistan’s Women Entrepreneurs Being Served by the Microfinance Sector?” released Wednesday finds that discriminatory lending practices are pushing Pakistan’s women entrepreneurs to look beyond microfinance providers (MFPs) for loans.
The report also finds that loans do not always benefit women borrowers. Men, who need loans, including those who have defaulted in the past, have begun to use women to access credit. Between 50 to 70 percent of microloans to women in Pakistan may actually be used by their male relatives. In such cases, women borrowers remain wholly accountable for these loans.
“Access to finance remains one of the biggest challenges for Pakistani women who want to start and grow a business,” says Rachid Benmessaoud, World Bank Country Director for Pakistan. “But strict guarantor requirements and the practice of offering business loan products exclusively to men have only widened the gap between Pakistani businesswomen and the microfinance sector.”
Microfinance loans for businesses are largely unavailable to women entrepreneurs, especially unmarriedwomen who are considered high-risk borrowers. MFP requirements make it difficult for businesswomen to secure loans without men as guarantors. Nearly 68 percent of women borrowers required a male relative’s permission in order to qualify for any kind of loan. In addition, nearly all MFPs require women clients to provide two male guarantors in order to access a business loan- and at least one of the guarantors should be unrelated to the borrower. MFPs do not accept women guarantors for these loans. Finding unrelated male guarantors can be a challenge for many Pakistani micro entrepreneurs who could be constrained by limited mobility and social barriers.
“Group loans are often the only option for women entrepreneurs, which isn’t ideal because they are expensive, time consuming and unsuitable to their business needs,” says Mehnaz Safavian, a Senior Economist at the World Bank. “Since only small loans are available under group lending, women clients often have to borrow from more than one MFI for their capital needs, which means more transaction costs.”
The report identifies steps the microfinance sector can take to expand its outreach to women entrepreneurs. The challenges are daunting, but investment in financial literacy and better designed products can give more women entrepreneurs the resources they need to grow their business. As a driver of microfinance policy, the State Bank of Pakistan can also further inclusion in microfinance by setting standards for consumer protection of women borrowers, advocating for transparency in gender reporting and discouraging discriminatory practices and policies.

Worldwide smartphone users top 1 bn: report

NEW YORK: Five years after the release of the iPhone, there are now over a billion smartphone users worldwide, according to a report released Wednesday.
US research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics said the number of users topped one billion in the third quarter of 2012, with one out of every seven people worldwide carrying one of the devices.
The first smartphone, the Nokia Communicator, came out in 1996, but demand for the devices exploded after the release of Apple's iPhone in 2007.
"The iPhone revolutionized smartphone design and it catalyzed industry growth," Strategy Analytics Senior Analyst Scott Bicheno said in a statement.
"By the third quarter of 2011, we estimate there were 708 million smartphones in use worldwide. After a further year of soaring demand, the number of smartphones in use worldwide reached 1,038 billion units."
The research firm said it expected the number of users to double to two billion in less than three years.
"Smartphone penetration is still relatively low," Strategy Analytics Executive Director Neil Mawston said.
"Most of the world does not yet own a smartphone and there remains huge scope for future growth, particularly in emerging markets such as China, India and Africa."
Apple, which has sold more than five million of its latest iPhone 5 model since its release last month, nevertheless faces stiff competition from Samsung and other models powered by Google's Android software.

Earth-sized planet found orbiting nearest star

PARIS: European astronomers on Wednesday reported they had detected a planet with about the mass of Earth which orbits the closest star to the Sun.
The observation breaks new ground in the hunt for exoplanets -- worlds that exist in other solar systems -- although the planet itself is not "another Earth" as it is located in a scorchingly hot zone.
The planet swings close to the star Alpha Centauri B, one of a triple star system that is 4.3 light years away, which in cosmic terms is just next door to us.
The find was made thanks to a telltale wobble in the star's motion, tugged by the gravitational pull of the passing planet.
The signal is "tiny but real," said Xavier Dumusque of the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland. "It's an extraordinary discovery and it has pushed our technique to the limit."
The transiting planet makes the star move back and forth, in relation to Earth, by less than two kilometres (one mile) per hour, about the speed of a baby crawling.
The minute motion was detected using an instrument called HARPS, for high-precision spectrograph, installed on the European Southern Observatory (ESO) at La Silla, in the depths of the Atacama desert in Chile.
It took hundreds of observations, spanning more than four years, for the "wobble" to be teased out of the other light signals.
The study, published in the journal Nature, shows the technical advances in exoplanet research since the very first was spotted in 1995.
Since then more than 750 exoplanets have been confirmed as sightings and another 2,300 claims are pending.
None, however, is both Earth-sized and in a habitable area, something that would bolster theories that life can exist beyond our world.
The quest is for a rocky planet the size of Earth in the "Goldilocks zone."
This means a planet at a comfy distance from the star, enabling the temperature to be not too hot nor too cold, but just right to sustain liquid water, the stuff of life.
In the case of Alpha Centauri B's planet, its "year" -- the time it takes to complete one orbit -- is just 3.236 days, which means it is located just six million kilometres (3.75 million miles) from its star.
But other finds could follow, and an even more tantalising discovery could be among them, the astronomers hope.
"Statistical studies of exoplanets suggest that low-mass planets are preferentially formed in multi-planetary systems," says the paper.
"There is therefore a high probability that other planets orbit Alpha Centauri B, perhaps in its habitable zone."
Alpha Centauri B and Alpha Centauri A are two stars that are similar to the Sun.
The third star in their system is somewhat more distant and cooler, and is named as Proxima Centauri.
These stars are very close to us in terms of cosmic distance, given that our galaxy, the Milky Way, is around 100,000 light years across.
Even so, they could never be reached by us using current chemical-based rocket technology.

Crude mixed in Asia as dealers weigh Europe news

SINGAPORE: Oil prices were mixed in Asia Wednesday as traders weighed global economic woes and an uptick in US crude inventories against positive developments in Europe, analysts said.
New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in November, rose 16 cents to $92.25 in the afternoon while Brent North Sea crude for December delivery shed five cents to $113.95.
Traders were "filter(ing) through the full impact of slow growth, increasing US stockpiles and the potential for positive eurozone progress", said Jason Hughes, head of premium client management for IG Markets Singapore.
Data released by the American Petroleum Institute showed crude stockpiles in the US -- the world's largest oil consumer -- rising 3.7 million barrels last week, higher than analyst projections of a two million barrel gain.
But crude prices were kept from falling after ratings agency Moody's late Tuesday decided not to cut Madrid's credit rating, citing its commitment to reforms and European Central Bank support for its debt.

Euro eases in Asia after Spain hopes

TOKYO: The euro eased in Asian afternoon trade on Wednesday after getting a boost from a decision by Moody's not to downgrade Spain's credit rating and rising hopes Madrid will seek a bailout.
The currency bought $1.3088 and 102.96 yen in Tokyo morning trade, slipping from $1.3096 and 103.31 yen in New York late Tuesday.
The dollar edged down to 78.68 yen from 78.89 yen.
Ratings agency Moody's offered critical breathing room Tuesday for Spain to fix its fiscal woes, holding the nation's debt rating unchanged at Baa3, one notch above "junk" grade, although a negative outlook means a downgrade is still a possibility.
"It was a factor we've been worried about since June, so with this news, it's likely that optimism toward the debt problem outlook will spread fast," said a senior dealer at a major bank in Tokyo.
Rising speculation that Spain will formally seek a bailout also supported the euro, as European Union leaders prepare for talks on Thursday while there are hopes of ending the year with a deal on a stronger economic and monetary union.

Pakistan floods kill 455, affect five million

ISLAMABAD: Monsoon floods in Pakistan have killed 455 people over the past five weeks and affected more than five million, according to the latest figures from the government's disaster relief agency.
Pakistan suffered devastating floods in the past two years, including the worst in its history in 2010 when catastrophic inundations across the country killed almost 1,800 people and affected 21 million.
As in the previous two years, most of those hit by the latest floods were in Sindh province, where the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said more than three million have been affected, with 890,000 in Punjab and nearly a million in Baluchistan.
More than 260,000 people around the country have sought shelter in relief camps since early September, though this figure is down from the 290,000 reported by NDMA two and a half weeks ago.
The data published by NDMA on Monday said more than 1.1 million acres (450,000 hectares) of crops were affected by the floods.

Asghar Khan case: 'No political cell in Presidency after Sept 2008'

A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed hearing of the Asghar Khan case. Khan has accused the ISI of financing politicians in 1990 election and creating the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) to prevent the PPP from winning the polls. The petition was based on an affidavit of former ISI Chief Durrani.
Justice Khilji Arif Hussain inquired of the president’s secretary as to whether a political cell existed in the presidency prior to Sept 2008.
Hayat said there were some files in the possession of the president’s military secretary, adding that he would be able to respond on the matter once he had reviewed those.
The attorney for former Army Chief General (retd) Aslam Beg also submitted his clients sworn statement and said there was a political cell in the Presidency.
Chief Justice Chaudhry remarked that Beg was aware of IJI funding and that the then President Ghullam Ishar Khan used to be briefed about the activities.
The Supreme Court also summoned the details of the 80 million rupees not distributed amongst politicians from the Ministry of Defence by Thursday.
Early during proceedings, the court was informed that former Brigadier Hamid Saeed of ISI, who was summoned to appear before the court today, could not do so because of being indisposed.
The bench subsequently issued summons for Hamid Saeed for Thursday– who Durrani previously alleged had a role in the distribution of money among politicians.
In his remarks, Chief Justice said that the then president’s support for the IJI was a violation of his oath.
The chief justice reiterated that the head of state should not support any political group.
“Under the Constitution, the president is the head of state, not the chief of a political party,” Chief Justice said.
Chief Justice Chaudhry also remarked that the Supreme Court may wrap up proceedings of the case by Thursday.

India’s disappearing taxis

The Premier Padmini was manufactured in India by Premier Automobiles from 1964 to 2000.

The vehicle quickly became the iconic workhorse in Mumbai’s fleet of black and yellow taxis until economic liberalization in the 1990s which allowed other models to be produced in India. Local media estimates put Mumbai’s current taxi fleet at about 51,000 vehicles, of which it is estimated that about 8,000 vehicles are over 25 years old.
With a government order banning taxis over 25 years old, the number of Premier Padmini taxis has begun to dwindle and, in a few years, they will be gone from Mumbai’s streets altogether.

Pietersen talks will end England rift

LONDON: England bowler Stuart Broad believes his international team-mates are ready to end their rift with Kevin Pietersen after agreeing to peace talks with the controversial batsman.
Pietersen was sent into exile during the Test series against South Africa after sending provocative text messages to the opposition that contained criticism of then England captain Andrew Strauss.
The 32-year-old was dropped for the final Test and has since been left out of the one-day series against South Africa and then World Twenty20 tournament in Sri Lanka, while Strauss retired from all forms of cricket during the controversy.
But Pietersen has now apologised for his behaviour and recently signed a new central contract with England after agreeing to enter a "re-integration" process.
The next step in bringing Pietersen in from the cold will be a meeting with his England team-mates and coach Andy Flower.
Flower and several of England senior stars were believed to be furious with Pietersen's actions in recent months, but there has been a softening of that attitude and Broad is hopeful the talks will aid the Surrey batsman's return in time for the forthcoming tours to India and New Zealand.
"It's in the management's hands. Of course (we'd welcome him back). We've had some amazing success with KP as a team," Broad told a British news channel on Tuesday.
"I've been in the side six years, we've won two Ashes series and a Twenty20 World Cup, and we know that KP is a really dangerous player for us.
"There's not a better man in charge than Andy Flower to put the situation right and there's a lot of trust in him at the moment.
"Whether it's for (the tour of) India or New Zealand, the team will welcome him back.
"We pride ourselves on being an honest changing room and the only way to move forward is to talk about things.
"There will be a meeting with some of the hierarchy and we just need to lay some things out.
"I think that will be a really good meeting with most of the England players, and hopefully we can move forward and draw a line under the whole experience."

Brad Pitt mystifies as first male face of Chanel No.5

LOS ANGELES: Brad Pitt made his debut as the first male face of Chanel's iconic No.5 fragrance on Monday, in an ad campaign that had fans and fashionistas split on the actor's latest role.
Pitt, 48, is seen with long hair and dressed casually, looking wistfully into the camera in an enigmatic black-and-white video directed by "Atonement" filmmaker Joe Wright.
"It's not a journey. Every journey ends, but we go on. The world turns, and we turn with it. Plans disappear, dreams take over. But wherever I go, there you are, my luck, my fate, my fortune. Chanel No.5, inevitable," the "Moneyball" actor says.
The video is part of a $10 million advertising campaign for which Pitt was paid $7 million, according to Women's Wear Daily.
Time magazine's Erik Hayden called the ad "nonsensical," saying Pitt's "vaguely existential monologue ... sounds like it could plausibly have been discarded narration from the trailer for Terrence Malick's (film) 'Tree of Life.'"
Us Weekly's Zach Johnson called the video "sensual," while Vanity Fair's Amy Fine Collins said the choice to cast Pitt as spokesperson showed the French fashion house "subtly circling back to its gender-twisting origins."
Pitt is the first male spokesperson for women's fragrance Chanel No.5, the first perfume launched by legendary French designer Coco Chanel in 1921.
In a statement from Chanel, the actor called the fragrance "revolutionary."
"N°5 has always been the most iconic women's fragrance," Pitt said. "That's what I see being the appeal of this campaign; it goes beyond the abstract of emotion or beauty to evoke what is timeless: a woman's spirit."
Chanel No.5 has been represented by actresses Audrey Tatou, Nicole Kidman and Catherine Deneuve in the past. It has also been linked with screen icon Marilyn Monroe after she famously said the fragrance was all she wore to bed.
LOVE, SCORN AND AMBIVALENCE
On Twitter and YouTube, some fans noted the somewhat ironic coincidence of the campaign's release tying in with the 13th anniversary of "Fight Club," in which Pitt played a consumerism-hating salesman.
While the video for Chanel No.5 had generated more than 3,000 'likes' on YouTube within the first 24 hours, it also has 850 'dislikes', with some commenters saying they believe the ad did not represent the fragrance.
Harper's Bazaar editor-at-large Derek Blasberg said on Twitter: "I've watched Brad Pitt's Chanel No.5 commercial, oh, about 17 times today. I still don't know how I feel about it."
Another Twitter user, Aime Rogers, said, " WHAT were they thinking?? So strange."
YouTube user BabyHippo26, said "So pretentious!!! Why does he look so sad and serious ... I? have been a long-time consumer of Chanel No.5 and Chanel products. This commercial has turned me off so much, I won't be buying No.5 again!"
Other fans, however, were mesmerized by the Hollywood star.
User Medusafern posted on YouTube: "it's his VOICE, that VOICE, Jesus, it's like one sweet drop of liquid angel I shall savor on my weary lips."
Twitter user Liz Lyons simply said, "I love love love Brad Pitt for Chanel No.5." (Reuters)

‘Zero Dark Thirty’ trailer offers great new footage

HOLLYWOOD: A second trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s hunt for bin Laden feature Zero Dark Thirty has arrived online, giving the first real glimpse at footage from the film.
Writer Mark Boal explained the rather strange title for the film, saying it refers to “[the] military term for 30 minutes after midnight [as well as] the darkness and secrecy that cloaked the entire decade-long mission.”
As the film gears up for what will likely be a serious Oscar push, Zero Dark Thirty has finally unveiled non-night vision footage, highlighting the film’s talented cast. Now that this footage is actually out, it will be interesting to see how general anticipation for this film changes. Of all potential Oscar-winners, this has previously been probably the only project where nothing was really known, other than the credentials of those involved and the timeliness of the material.
The film focuses on the black ops mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden, which culminated in his death in May of 2011 in a compound in Pakistan. The Hurt Locker team of Kathyrn Bigelow and Mark Boal has been developing the project since as early as 2008.
Just today EW revealed that James Gandolfini is not only in the cast, but plays a “top secret,” important role within the CIA, Leon Panetta, current Secretary of Defense in the Obama administration.
The film, which stars a ton of big names including Jason Clarke (Public Enemies), Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation), Joel Edgerton (Warrior), James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Jessica Chastain (The Help), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), Edgar Ramirez (Carlos), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), stuntman Nash Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle (Contagion), Harold Perrineau Jr. (Lost), Ricky Sekhon and Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed), is scheduled for a December 19, 2012 release.

World XI to visit Pakistan for exhibition T20s

KARACHI: Pakistan will host a World XI for two Twenty20 matches, officials said Tuesday, in hopes of moving a step closer to resuming home internationals which have been suspended for more than three years.

Foreign sides have refused to play in Pakistan since 2009, when the Sri Lankan team was attacked as they arrived for the third day of the second Test in Lahore, leaving eight people dead.

Former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya will lead the World XI, which also includes former players from South Africa and the West Indies. They will play a Pakistan All Stars side in Karachi on Saturday and Sunday.

Mohammad Ali Shah, sports minister for Sindh province, said the matches will help restore Pakistan's image in the world.

"We hope that this small step will pave the way for other teams to tour Pakistan and by staging these matches we hope to send a clear message that our country is safe for international sports," Shah told a press conference.

Former West Indian batsman Alvin Kallicharan will be the manager of the World XI, said Shah.

The World XI will also include Ricardo Powell, Steven Taylor, Jermaine Charles Lawson and Adam Sanford, all from the West Indies; South Africa's Justin Kemp, Loots Bosman, Mthandeki Tschabalala, Andre Nel, Andre Johann Seymore and Nantie Hayward; and Shapoor Zadran and Mohammad Shahzad Mohammadi of Afghanistan.

Shah said strict security would be in place.

"Around 5,000 policemen will be employed to avoid any lapse and we are sure that these arrangements will made the players at ease," said Shah. "All the players are excited over the prospect of visiting Pakistan."

Pakistan All Stars will be led by current all-rounder Shahid Afridi and include Younis Khan, Nasir Jamshed, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami, Wahab Riaz and Imran Nazir. (AFP)

Malala to undergo reconstructive surgery

BIRMINGHAM: Malala Yousafzai will undergo reconstructive surgery according to the medical director of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dave Rosser.
Rosser added that doctors were currently holding consultations regarding the surgery.
Earlier while speaking to the media, Rosser said British colleagues who were in Pakistan when Malal was shot believed she had “a chance of making a good recovery”.
"Clearly it would be inappropriate on every level, not least for her, to put her through all of this if there was no hope of decent recovery," he told reporters.
The 14 year old is currently being kept in the intensive care unit of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Malala along with two other female students were attacked by the Taliban outside their school in Mingora, Swat.
Malala was shot in the head and the bullet had been lodged in her neck. The bullet was removed during surgery and Malala was transferred to the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) in Rawalpindi for further treatment.
She was flown to Birmingham via an air ambulance provided by the UAE on Tuesday.

Malala shooting attack on all Pakistani girls: Zadari

BAKU: President Asif Ali Zardari said Tuesday that the shooting of 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai by the Taliban was an attack on all girls in the country and on civilisation itself.
"The Taliban attack on the 14-year-old girl, who from the age of 11 was involved in the struggle for education for girls, is an attack on all girls in Pakistan, an attack on education, and on all civilised people," Zardari said at an economic summit in the Azerbaijani capital Baku.
Malala was attacked on her school bus in the former Taliban stronghold of the Swat valley a week ago as a punishment for campaigning for the right to an education and free expression.
In some of his most poignant remarks on the incident to date, President Zardari vowed not to let her shooting stop the nation's drive to educate girls. "The work that she led was higher before God than what terrorists do in the name of religion. We will continue her shining cause," he said.
The shooting has been denounced worldwide and by Pakistan, which has said it will do everything possible to ensure Malala recovers and will meet all the costs of her treatment. She was flown to Britain for treatment on Monday where doctors said she had "a chance of making a good recovery".
The murder attempt has sickened Pakistan, where Malala came to prominence with a blog for the BBC highlighting atrocities under the hardline Islamist Taliban, who terrorised the Swat valley from 2007 until an army offensive in 2009.
President Zardari urged for a collective efforts for wiping out terrorists, as terrorism was no more confined to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He said that the regional countries like European Union must put up their united efforts for fighting terrorism and paving way for peace, progress and economic development.

5.9-magnitude earthquake hits Solomons: USGS

SYDNEY: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake rattled the Pacific's Solomon Islands Sunday, seismologists said, but there were no reports of damage and no tsunami alert was issued.
The quake struck 86 kilometres (53 miles) south-west of remote Chirovanga, on the island of Choiseul at 0458 GMT at a depth of 60 kilometres, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicentre was about 500 kilometres from the Solomons capital Honiara.
Geoscience Australia, which put the quake's magnitude at 6.0, said there was no tsunami generated, and there were no immediate reports of damage in the sparsely populated area.
The Solomon Islands form part of the Ring of Fire, a zone of tectonic activity around the Pacific Ocean that is subject to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In 2007 a tsunami following an 8.1-magnitude earthquake killed at least 52 people in the Solomons and left thousands homeless.

Mauritanian president shot accidentally by army: minister

NOUAKCHOTT: Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was shot and "slightly wounded" Saturday when an army unit accidentally fired on his convoy, an official said.
Abdel Aziz is being treated at a military hospital in the capital Nouakchott, according to a security source and Communications Minister Hamdi Ould Mahjoub.
"This was an accidental shooting on the presidential convoy as it returned to Nouakchott. The army unit did not recognize the presidential convoy," Mahjoub said on national television.
"The Mauritanian people can be reassured, the president is fine... He was slightly wounded, and he got out of the vehicle unassisted upon arrival at the hospital, where he walked in without difficulty."
Earlier, a security source told AFP that Abdel Aziz was hit in the arm by a bullet that a motorist fired at him as he was driving north out of the capital to his weekend retreat in nearby Tweila.
The president's "life is not in danger, he got out and walked to a military hospital where he received first aid," the source said.
The hospital was placed under high surveillance by the presidential guard.
Opposition lawmakers accuse the former general of despotism and mismanagement and having failed to heed commitments made in the Dakar accords that led to his election in 2009, a year after he seized power in a coup d'etat.
Abdel Aziz's mandate expires in 2014.
The opposition wants a transition government to take over from Abdel Aziz and find a way out of the crisis, dealing with issues such as unemployment, slavery and attacks on human rights.

Israeli air strike in Gaza kills Palestinian militant

Gaza: An Israeli air strike in Gaza killed a Palestinian gunman and wounded another on Sunday, hospital officials said, hours after Israel killed the leader of an al Qaeda-linked militant group.
An Israeli military spokesman confirmed there had been an Israeli attack in Gaza but gave no details. The air strike, on a motorcycle in southern Gaza, came hours after Israel killed two other militants in a similar attack late on Saturday.
Hamas, the Islamist group that rules Gaza, identified one of the men killed in that air strike as Hisham Al-Saedni, head of the Jihadist Salafi group Tawhid and Jihad (One God and Holy War), a group with an Islamist ideology shared by al Qaeda.ID:nL5E8LD4NX] A number of Jihadist Salafi groups have surfaced in Gaza in recent years. Unlike Hamas, they endorse an ideology of global Jihad and some accuse Hamas of failing to implement Islamic laws in the coastal enclave.
Hamas rejects permanent peace with Israel and the two sides fought a three-week war from December 2008 into January 2009.The border is tense, with frequent clashes. About 40 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel in October. Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for any attacks launched from Gaza, which has been under the group's control since 2007.

Damage but no injuries as U.S. Navy cruiser, submarine collide

WASHINGTON: A U.S. Navy Aegis cruiser collided with a nuclear-powered submarine during exercises off the East Cost on Saturday, collapsing the sonar dome on the cruiser and possibly causing other damage, but no injuries, U.S. Navy officials said.
The collision between the USS San Jacinto and the nuclear-powered submarine USS Montpelier occurred about 3:30 p.m., the Navy said in a statement. The Navy declined to say where off the East Coast the accident occurred.
A Navy official said the watch team aboard the San Jacinto saw a periscope rise from the water about 100 to 200 yards (meters) ahead of the vessel during the exercise. The cruiser ordered "all back," but the San Jacinto still collided with the submarine.
The collision caused the collapse of the cruiser's sonar dome, a bulbous-shaped device on the bow of the ship beneath the water line, the Navy official said on condition of anonymity.
The rubber dome houses some of the vessel's electronic navigation, detection and ranging equipment.
The Navy said no personnel were injured during the incident and there was no damage to the submarine's nuclear-powered propulsion plant. Both vessels were operating under their own power.
The ships were part of a strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman. The Truman was in the area and providing support to the vessels.
The incident is being investigated, the Navy said, and overall damage to both ships is still being evaluated. (Reuters)
