President signs Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan bill


ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has signed the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan Bill (DRAP), 2012.
The bill had earlier been approved by the National Assembly and Senate after being moved by Minister for National Regulation and Services Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan.
The bill states that a DRAP will be formed to tackle issues related to drug manufacturing, sales and distribution.
Under the bill a Drug Policy Board will also be formed and will consist of 16 members which will include members of pharmaceutical companies.
A chief executive officer (CEO) will be appointed by the prime minister after receiving recommendations from the Drug policy Board to head the DRAP.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Zardari congratulated the parliament and all political parties over the passage of the bill.
“The signing of this bill will ensure the available of quality medical services to the people.”
President Zardari said it was to the credit of this government to establish the DRA in line with other countries of the world.
He added that the under the DRAP bill, medicine would be provided at an affordable cost.
