Judiciary should never fall victim to expediency: CJ

SHAIKHUPURA: The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Saturday said the judiciary should never fall victim to 'expediency' and termed the November 3, 2007 as a 'crucial day' in the struggle towards independence of judiciary.
Addressing the Shaikhupura Bar Association, the Chief Justice said those at the helm of the country's affairs at the time had no clue about the level of resistance that they would have to face on November 3. "The lawyers community vowed to save Pakistan on November 3," he said, adding it was a crucial day for the campaign of judiciary's independence.
He said for anyone to be capable of holding the reigns to the country's governance would have to believe in the supremacy of law.
The Chief Justice recalled that no one had put up any resistance at the time of declaration of the very first martial law in the country. "Those holding reigns of power, instead of being loyal to the Constitution, repeatedly imposed martial laws," he regretted.
He also lamented that unfortunately no one stood up in defiance when emergency was declared once again in 1999.
